I manage PPE buying for a 140-person field service and repair company. We spend roughly $60,000 a year on gloves, eyewear, footwear, and related safety items. I have tracked every purchase order since 2020, so this checklist comes from actual invoices and trial reports, not a vendor brochure.
Use this when you are reviewing PPE for a team, not when a single worker needs one pair. It is not a substitute for a hazard assessment. It is the procurement side: how to turn a risk profile into a purchase order without overbuying or underprotecting.
The checklist has six steps. Pricing and standards below reflect our Q4 2024 review. PPE specifications change, especially cut standards and FR claims, so verify current documents before you issue a PO.
1. Build the work task profile before you pick a HexArmor model
I do not open a product catalog first. I list the jobs and the actual contact points: sharp metal edges, grinding sparks, sheet metal, concrete, chemical spills, weather, impact hazards. Every job site is different.
For example, the HexArmor HexBlue 2137 cut level A6 gloves look like an obvious choice when a supervisor asks for the most cut-resistant thing. A6 is a strong rating on the current ANSI/ISEA 105 cut scale. But when I checked our workstations, only four of nine metal-handling jobs needed that level. The others needed less cut resistance and more dexterity. Ordering A6 everywhere would have been safer on paper, worse in practice.
The rule for me: start with the operation, then the body part, then the standard. The product name should be the last piece of the decision.
2. Put the shortlisted products through a real trial
In 2024, we tested the HexArmor Chrome SLT FR cut resistant gloves in one maintenance cell that involves sharp metal and occasional heat. The purchase order side said try them, but the spreadsheet still favored the incumbent glove because the price per pair was lower.
The numbers pointed one way; my gut said to run the trial longer. The crew kept rotating through the cheap gloves because torn gloves were showing up in returns faster than I expected. After four weeks, the Chrome SLT FR cut resistant gloves had a noticeably lower replacement rate. That shifted the cost comparison. Not ideal for the budget that quarter, but workable over the rest of the year.
If you can make one process change this year, make it this: buy samples, let the people who wear them work in them for two weeks, and collect the gloves afterward. Count failures. Ask which gloves came off and why. This catches fit, sizing, and dexterity problems that no spec sheet captures.
3. Compare cost per protected hour, not price per glove
Price per pair tells you almost nothing. The number I care about is total cost divided by usable protection time.
Track the purchase price, freight or minimum-order fees, inventory SKU cost, issue time, and replacement frequency. Also track what happens when a glove or boot fails: does the worker stop work? Does a supervisor order an emergency replacement with expedited freight?
This is why a seemingly expensive cut-resistant glove can win. If a $20 glove lasts 20 shifts and a $7 glove lasts 4 shifts, the $20 glove costs $1.00 per shift against $1.75 per shift for the lower-priced one. I make this calculation after a trial rather than from marketing specs.
I also factor in the client-facing side of quality. In 2023, our site was audited by a customer’s safety team. There was no violation. But one note in their summary said PPE condition inconsistent. That note was not about compliance; it was about perception. Since then, I treat quality as part of the brand. That does not mean buying the most expensive option. It means avoiding the option that looks and fails cheap.
4. Buy for the two categories people forget: tinted safety glasses and metatarsal boots
Most PPE conversations start with hand protection. Eyewear and footwear are often afterthoughts, which is exactly when expensive mistakes show up.
Tinted safety glasses are not the same as sunglasses with a safety-style frame. I learned that when our outside crews kept two pairs in their trucks: one clear, one tinted, both chosen for comfort more than function. That worked until someone wore dark glasses into a shaded area and had to decide between seeing and being protected. Tinted safety glasses still need an impact-rated lens. They also need a tint level matched to the work environment. This is one of those cases where a worker will quietly stop wearing them if the fit or lens color is wrong.
Metatarsal boots are another blind spot. A normal safety toe boot protects the toes. A metatarsal boot adds coverage over the upper foot area, and it usually carries a specific ASTM F2413 marking. When we added metatarsal protection to our warehouse and loading requirements, our approved boot list changed fast. Some vendors offered steel toe boots in the same price range, but not true metatarsal boots. Check the label, because safety toe and metatarsal are not the same spec.
For both items, buy samples and treat the fit data like test data. If the safety manager or procurement group picks the compliant item but no one actually wears it, the real protection level is zero.
5. Resolve the latex gloves vs nitrile question with your chemical list
The latex gloves vs nitrile debate usually shows up when a purchasing team is trying to trim costs. Latex can look cheaper on the invoice, and for some tasks it performs perfectly well.
But in industrial maintenance and repair, nitrile is my default for most chemical handling because it resists oils, grease, and many solvents much better than latex. It also avoids the risk of latex allergies in a workforce that changes over time. That last item is not just a comfort issue. Once a worker develops a latex sensitivity, every glove change and cleaning task becomes more complicated.
I get the argument for latex. It has good elasticity and can be comfortable. To be fair, not every task requires oil resistance. If a team only handles dry parts or food-contact tasks, latex can be a reasonable lower-cost choice when allergies are not present. The mistake is making the decision glove-by-glove or budget-by-budget. First, list the chemicals and oils the gloves will touch. Then choose the glove compound. If the vendor cannot provide a chemical compatibility table for the extended contact time, move on.
6. Last check before you order: documentation and labeling
The final step is boring, and that is the point.
For every product line, I want:
- The standard behind each claim, and the test report version.
- The label or marking that will appear on the actual product, such as ANSI/ISEA cut level, ASTM F2413 marking for boots, or ANSI Z87.1 for eyewear.
- A written description of where each product should and should not be used.
- A replacement schedule based on observed wear, not a vague replace-as-needed instruction.
If a supplier says a glove is FR, I ask what the flame-resistant claim covers and which test method backs it up. The same logic applies to cut level A6. If the answer is that it should be on the box, treat that as a warning sign.
One more time: this checklist reflects my purchasing experience as of the 2024 procurement cycle. Standards change, and suppliers revise lines without making a lot of noise. Before you order a larger volume, request current product documentation and check the labels on the actual shipment, not the images in the catalog.
If you run the checklist this way, the HexArmor name becomes a starting point rather than the whole decision. That is how I get a lower total cost per protected hour and avoid buying PPE that ends up in a bin behind the workbench.
