Not every PPE decision has a clean answer. I buy safety products for a 180-person metal fabrication and assembly shop, and I have been managing the PPE side of our budget—roughly $85,000 a year—for eight years. First, think about what is actually hurting your crew or wearing out their current gloves. Leather handles heat, sparks, sharp burrs, and abrasive surfaces better than most synthetic materials. The trade-off is dexterity. A leather work glove is usually thicker and less nimble than a coated cut-resistant glove.
Synthetic gloves—the coated string-knit styles—are often the easier call for assembly, small parts, and tasks where you need finger control. They tend to be lighter and more breathable. The weakness is that they don’t survive heavy abrasion as well as leather.
HexArmor leather gloves make sense when you need the outside layer to take punishment and the inside liner to handle cut risk. That combination works in heavier fabrication, metal recycling, and other rough environments. But I wouldn't replace every synthetic glove with leather. The right answer for many shops is both stocked side by side, selected by task. That is less convenient for procurement, but it’s the honest answer.
HexArmor PointGuard Cut Level A6 Gloves: Are They Worth the Upgrade?
First, “A6” is not just a product name. It refers to a cut-resistance rating under ANSI/ISEA 105, and A6 sits on the high side of that scale. For sharp stamped metal, glass, and other true edge-contact hazards, A6 is a legitimate target. For light packaging, general maintenance, or material handling with no sharp edges, it is overkill.
Overkill in gloves means you pay extra and lose some comfort for protection you don’t need. But I also know what it feels like to underspec. I compared an A4 glove against A6 for a sharp-edge job, and the A4 price looked better on paper. The A4 glove showed visible damage within a shift. Nobody was cut, but I didn’t wait to see where that was going. Looking back, I should have started with A6 in that area. My advice is not “always buy A6.” It is: look at the actual damage pattern, and don’t argue with the evidence.
Are Tactical Boots Better for Everyday Work?
“Tactical” is a style, not a safety rating. Some tactical boots are genuinely comfortable—lighter than a bulky logger boot, stable underfoot, and easier to drive in. For supervisors, inspectors, warehouse leads, and similar roles, they can outperform traditional work boots on comfort.
But if the job requires impact or compression protection, a soft-toe boot isn’t acceptable just because it’s called tactical. In our plant, we check for the ASTM F2413 safety-toe mark before anyone enters areas where that protection is required. The same logic applies to any footwear. Use the rating to define the boot, and use comfort to choose between boots that meet the rating.
Are Tecovas Work Boots Worth the Price?
Tecovas work boots are quality leather boots. They are also not the cheapest option. I have seen people treat “expensive” and “right” as the same thing, which is how you end up with a premium piece of footwear in an environment that doesn’t suit it.
For site visits, inspections, light fieldwork, and jobs where you stand, walk, and drive, Tecovas are worth considering. The leather quality is good, and the fit tends to be comfortable after break-in. If your job requires a rated safety toe, check the exact model before assuming it has one. And if your day is chemicals, weld spatter, or deep mud, then a pull-on leather boot—no matter how nice—is probably the wrong tool.
One more thing: a boot at this price demands basic maintenance. You don’t buy a pair and then ignore salt, mud, and heat damage. That brings me to the question people don’t ask until it’s too late.
How to Clean Leather Work Boots Without Ruining Them
Short version: brush them, clean them with saddle soap, dry them slowly, and condition them. It sounds simple, but I ruined a good pair by drying them next to a space heater after a wet site day. The leather cracked at the toe and nothing could fix it. If I could redo it, I would let them dry overnight at room temperature instead.
- Remove the laces and knock the boots together outside to loosen mud.
- Use a soft brush to clear dirt from the seams and crevices.
- Wipe with a damp cloth. For heavier dirt, use saddle soap in a light lather and wipe it off. Don’t soak the leather.
- Let the boots air dry with cedar shoe trees or crumpled paper inside. Keep them away from radiators and direct sun.
- Apply a leather conditioner after they are dry.
A cleaner and conditioner might cost $20 total. That’s a lot less than replacing a pair of leather work boots every year because they dried out or cracked. For work boots in the Tecovas price range, the best procurement move is maintenance.
Can I Get a Fair Deal If I Only Need a Small Batch of HexArmor Gloves?
Small orders are not second-class orders. Some suppliers treat a 12-pair trial like a nuisance, and I see that as a red flag. If they dismiss the small order, what will they do if a large order has a warranty issue later?
I have been on the buyer side of this. Our first HexArmor trial was a small order, and the distributor took it seriously—no inflated sample fee, no minimum-order lecture. That relationship is still one of our main supply lines. Small orders don’t get bulk pricing; the math doesn’t work like that. But good advice and fair service should not disappear just because the quantity is small.

This is the question a lot of budget owners skip. If you run gloves until they fall apart, you are managing risk later than you should. I used to do that, and frankly, it felt like good cost control. Now we do quick inspections before high-risk jobs: deep cuts, worn coatings, exposed liner, damaged seams—those gloves are done. For leather boots, we watch soles and stitching. The budget needs room for early replacement instead of pretending everything will last the same number of months. Honest replacement is cheaper than the alternative.
