But here is the part that gets missed: no federal standard requires a color code. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 (R2019) tells you how a hard hat performs, not what color it should be. The color system is site-specific. If someone tells you a color means something, ask for the written site policy. If there isn't one, it is a guess.

What actually keeps me up at night is Type 1 hard hat vs Type 2. I learned this the hard way during a last-minute reorder. We had crews replacing guardrails on a sloped site, and the expedited order arrived with Type 1 helmets. I assumed 'same specifications' meant the same head protection. It did not.

The vendor who cannot say 'this is Type 1 and this is Type 2' is not a safety supplier—they are a box shipper.

Eyewear and boots are where shortcuts show up

Standards move slowly, but editions change. I verified the versions above during our January 2025 PPE review. Before you rely on any standard, check the current edition. That is exactly the kind of detail a generalist skips.

Why I'd rather hear 'we don't do that'

You might say a specialist costs more. In my experience, it costs less. The one-stop supplier who could not distinguish Type 1 from Type 2 cost us two weeks of rectification and a site delay. The vendor who sends four alternatives and dares you to choose one is not being helpful. That is a list, not a recommendation.

On the other hand, the supplier who once told me 'this is not our strength—here is who does it better' earned my trust for everything else. I would rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.
