$14K in PPE Mistakes: Nitrile vs Latex Gloves, HexArmor VS250, Ceros Hard Hats & Work Boots

I'm a safety manager handling PPE purchasing for a mid-sized industrial contractor. I've been in this role for 8 years—well, almost 9 now. The first thing I learned, the hard way: there's no universal "best" when it comes to PPE. What works for an electrical utility crew is wrong for a demolition crew. The right call depends on the scenario you're actually in.

Hand Protection: Nitrile vs Latex Gloves (and the Cut Hazard Blind Spot)

Every safety manager gets asked about nitrile vs latex gloves. My answer: nitrile, for 90% of what we do. Latex has slightly better raw flexibility, but nitrile is more resistant to oils and chemical splash, and it eliminates any concern about Type I latex allergies in your crew. Oh, and don't assume all nitrile gloves are the same—the chemical compatibility chart differs by manufacturer, and that matters more than thickness.

In May 2021, I bought a bulk deal on latex disposable gloves because they were $6 per box cheaper than nitrile. I saved maybe $190 on that order. Three workers developed contact dermatitis; one needed a dermatology visit; and I had to reorder the nitrile version anyway. That "savings" ended up costing about $1,100, plus two days of disrupted work.

But here's the blind spot that still shows up in safety audits: disposable gloves won't stop a cut. If your crew handles sharp metal, glass, or sheet stock, the right answer is a cut-resistant glove—which is HexArmor's core strength—either as a base layer with nitrile over it, or side-by-side depending on the task. Footwear: Chelsea Work Boots, DeWalt Work Boots, and the One-Boot Fallacy

Two years ago, I made the decision to standardize our crew on one model of work boot. Composite toe, electrical hazard rating, slip-resistant sole, in budget. Check, check, check, check.

And the crew hated them. Half said the boots felt like clodhoppers on ladders and in confined spaces. The other half got blisters and arch pain. I replaced 15 pairs within ten months—at roughly $170 a pair. That's $2,550 so I could say we were "standardized."

The better approach is to branch the decision by scenario:

Scenario A: Frequent donning and doffing. Workers who are in and out of vehicles, or stepping into clean areas, need the convenience of a good men's Chelsea work boot—the slip-on style with elastic sides. It saves time and reduces the temptation to skip proper footwear. But the fit across the instep has to be right; a loose Chelsea boot is worse than no boot.

Scenario B: Heavy-duty terrain and ankle support. Workers on rough ground, muddy sites, or carrying significant loads need lace-up boots that secure the ankle and hold the heel in place. Look for current ASTM F2413 compliance, appropriate steel or composite toe, and a sole that matches the terrain.

On DeWalt work boots specifically: a good chunk of my crew swear by them—consistent sizing and comfortable for them. But that's exactly the point. No single brand fits everyone's feet. Over the last year, I stopped trying to pick one brand and instead maintained an approved boot list of three to four models across styles, with a boot allowance. In 12 months, foot-related complaints dropped by more than half. The cost was roughly the same. The PPE actually got worn.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In

If that felt like a lot of branching, here's the simple system I now follow:

  1. Walk the floor and do the hazard assessment first. Not the one from the binder—the one where you actually watch the work and talk to the crew.
  2. Test options before you commit. Buy 3–5 candidates per category. Let your crew wear each one for a week. Let them vote. I've caught 47 potential errors using this pre-check since February 2024, and it's saved roughly $4,500.
  3. Track cost per wear, not unit price. A $10 pair of glasses that survives a week is $520 a year. A $40 pair that lasts a year is a bargain.
  4. Never order for the whole crew from a spec sheet. Trial on a small group first. I still remember buying 60 pairs of the wrong gloves.
Buy for the scenario, not the "standard."

Every workplace is different, and PPE products change fast. Standards and product specs evolve, so verify current models and ratings before ordering. But that principle—buy for the scenario—has held up across every one of my $14,000 in mistakes. If you get nothing else from this, get that.
