$7,000 in Wrong PPE Orders Taught Me How to Actually Buy Safety Gear
January 2023. I'm standing in our supply closet holding three boxes of gloves that are all wrong, and I know it.
One pair is so stiff the crew nicknamed them "the claws." The next pair says "Level 5" on the label, which sounds strong until you actually learn what Level 5 means. The third set is a bulk box of knit gloves we eventually donated to a local charity.
I've been handling PPE orders for our metal fabrication shop for about four years. In that time, I made six significant mistakes, totaling roughly $7,000 in wasted budget. Maybe $7,300—I'd have to check the spreadsheet. Every one of those mistakes taught me something I use now.
This is what I learned, and the process I built to keep it from happening again.
How I ended up in this mess
I'm a safety coordinator, which sounds more official than it is. We're a mid-sized metal shop with about 140 employees. When our old safety manager left in 2020, I inherited PPE purchasing along with the other 40% of his job that nobody else wanted.
I didn't know anything about cut-resistant glove ratings. I didn't know what ANSI Z89.1 meant. I definitely didn't know the difference between a tactical vest and a regular safety vest. I was starting from zero, and the market was happy to take my money.
Mistake 1: I thought "cut-resistant" was one category
The first big order was for the deburring department. The supervisor asked for "cut resistant safety gloves" because the crew works with sharp galvanized steel edges all day.

That's the misconception that got me: more protection equals better safety. It's backwards. What actually works is protection matched to the task, combined with something people will actually wear.

Here's what you need to know: slip-on boots can be just as protective as lace-ups. Look for the same standards—ASTM F2413 for impact and compression resistance, plus a slip-resistant sole. The closure is a comfort preference. It's not a safety downgrade.
Trust me on this one. If your crew asks for slip-ons, listen. Just don't buy the cheapest pair you can find.
Mistake 3: The Green Devil hard hat
A foreman came to me in late 2022 and asked if I'd ever heard of a green devil hard hat. I thought he was pulling my leg.

The process that finally worked
After the boot disaster, I built a four-step checklist. This is what I wish I'd had in 2021.
- Define the hazard first. Not the product name—the actual risk. Sharp edges? Impact? Chemical exposure? Write it down.
- Check the standard. ANSI/ISEA 105 for gloves, ANSI Z89.1 for hard hats, ASTM F2413 for footwear. Make sure the rating matches the hazard.
- Test with the crew. Buy samples. Hand them to the actual workers. Watch what they wear and listen to the complaints.
- Buy from someone who knows. If a distributor can't explain the rating on their own product, move on.
In the 18 months since I put that list together, we've caught at least 40 potential errors before spending money. Much better than a pile of $7,000 mistakes sitting in a supply closet.
There's something genuinely satisfying about catching an error before it reaches the shop floor. After the glove incident, I wasn't sure I'd ever trust my own PPE decisions again. Now I do. Not because I'm smarter, but because I have a process.
Bottom line
The best PPE is the PPE people actually wear. A glove rated A9 that your team takes off whenever you're not looking is just an expensive decoration.
