Cheap Work Boots Cost More. Here’s the Math from a Procurement Manager.

I manage procurement for a 340-person industrial maintenance contractor. Our PPE budget is roughly $112,000 a year, and if you ask me, most of that budget is wasted on the wrong numbers.

We chase unit price. We compare gloves by the box, boots by the pair, and safety glasses by the case. Then we ignore what happens after the purchase.

The fundamentals—impact protection, puncture resistance, cut resistance—have not changed. The execution has transformed.

One plant manager told me his grandfather wore the same leather work boots for a decade. I didn’t argue. I also didn’t mention that his grandfather was not required to meet ASTM F2413-18.

The Bottom Line

So here is my position, and I am not going to soften it halfway. If you are still buying the lowest-priced work boots that pass a quick visual check, you are not being frugal. You are relying on luck. And luck runs out.

Is every price increase justified? No. Some products are expensive for no reason. But the answer is not “always buy the cheapest.” The answer is “measure what matters.”

If you understand how a smoke detector works, you understand that the cheapest alarm is not the best one. The best one is the one that works when the smoke starts. That is the same mindset I now use for every PO on my desk—including work boots.
